Michigan Football Players Assaulted - Reporters captured video of what appears to be about 10 Spartans surrounding one Michigan player, with some Spartans landing kicks and punches.
Five Michigan State players were charged Monday with misdemeanor assaults stemming from an altercation in the Michigan Stadium tunnel after the Michigan-Michigan game in late October.

The players, redshirt junior Itayvion Brown, junior Angelo Grose, redshirt junior Justin White, senior Brandon Wright and Zion Young, each received a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, and each will be scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Dec. 15 before Karen. . Quinlan Valvo, chief judge of the 15th Judicial District Court in Ann Arbor.

The player and his attorney appeared early Friday morning before Judge Tamara Garwood of the 15th Judicial District Court.
Garwood ordered the players to have contact with each other only for football purposes. Outside of football goals, he should have a lawyer. Garwood also ordered the players to have no contact with the Michigan football team, the Michigan football coach or the University of Michigan, an order that defense attorneys disagreed with, calling it a ban on visiting Ann Arbor.
"To put these kids in this situation and consider them a danger to anyone at the University of Michigan outside of the context of a very emotional sporting event when we don't even know the truth of what the impulse is. This, I'm serious ," Wade Fink, Brown's attorney, said during the trial. "You are talking about a very emotional situation. No one can suggest that Mr. Brown is a danger to anyone, quite the opposite. He is a gentle, kind young man, good charity for his family, good for him. friends, good. for his program. I consider that there is a danger for the University of Michigan, coaches, players who, outside the context of the war that happens all the time.
"I don't recall coach Juwan Howard being banned from contacting the University of Wisconsin. I'm just a little worried about the severity, judge. But that's your right."

Howard, the Michigan basketball coach, was suspended for the last five games of last regular season after an incident in which he slapped the Wisconsin coach after a game in Madison.
"Juwan Howard didn't come before me," Garwood said in response to Fink. "If he had come in front of me, if it had happened here and he had been in front of me, he probably would have been in the same situation."
Attorneys for Michigan State football players also said the Washtenaw County District Attorney's office asked Garwood to impose drug and alcohol tests on five players facing charges Monday. Garwood did not claim it, and Washtenaw County prosecutor Eli Savit said the claims were "absolutely false." The box for drug and alcohol testing was not checked on the bond form, Savit said. Conditions requested by prosecutors, he said, include no firearms, and no contact with the alleged victim. The office is not asking for a complete no-contact with Michigan players, coaches and the university community, Savit said.
Five Michigan State players in court were each charged with one count of aggravated assault, a misdemeanor that carries a potential sentence of one year in prison or a fine of up to $1,000, or both.
Michigan's Gemon Green To Press Charges After Michigan State Fight
The sixth player accused of misconduct, senior Jacoby Windmon, was charged earlier this week. A seventh player, redshirt sophomore Khary Crump, faces a felony assault charge after he was seen on video swinging his helmet at a Michigan player shortly after Michigan's 29-7 win on Oct. 29. Crump was also charged earlier this week.
The tunnel incident, caught on camera by Matt Charboneau of The Detroit News, led to the suspension of eight Michigan State players, and the Big Ten fined Michigan State $100,000.
At least two attorneys for Michigan State players there alleged bias on the part of the prosecutor and the judge, both Michigan alums. Savit took some heat this week after the felony gun charge against Michigan star Mazi Smith was filed this week, even though the incident happened on Oct. 7, the day before the Indiana game. Smith has played in every Michigan game this season, and is expected to play in Saturday's Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis.
"This was a football-related incident that should not have been investigated by the police or prosecuted by the Washtenaw County prosecutor," said Jack Kramer, Wright's attorney. "I believe there is an implicit bias from the prosecutor's office and the court that went into this legal process. This is completely inappropriate.

"While I appreciate that the judge listened to the attorneys and allowed us to file, I believe he acted inappropriately in suggesting that the player was a threat to the University of Michigan or the community, which is absolutely not the case." Kramer continued. "Hopefully going forward, prosecutors and judges will put the fandom aside and give their clients a fair shake."
Savit's response: "These cases were prosecuted based on the evidence and the law. There is nothing more to say. We treated these cases like any other."
The five Michigan State players charged Friday were allowed to travel home, despite being out of state. 2:58 am PT - Michigan State has announced the suspension of four more players for their roles in the postgame melee.
